Most sculptures produced by Cynthia McKean are appropriate for placement both indoors and out. It is imperative that materials are durable, fabrication is clean and strong, and that the finish system is of excellent quality and applied appropriately.
Usually Cynthia’s work is made from structural steel flat plates, round and square tubes. The tubes may be as small as 1” square or as large as 16” in diameter. They are cut, sliced, arranged and welded. The parts, and even the finished pieces, may weigh just a few pounds or over 1000 lbs. She has cranes and carts to move the big stuff around and a hydraulic lift on the tailgate of her pickup.
For designs which require precision cutting of parts, and/or are too big for her barn, she has partnered with a manufacturing facility with state-of-the-art laser-cutting and welding capabilities.
When fabrication is complete she sends the sculptures out to be painted. Depending upon specific circumstances they are either finished with automotive paint or powder coated. If an automotive system is used, sculptures are typically sand blasted, prime painted, painted, and clear coated. If a powder coating system is used, they are typically sent through a shot blaster, prime painted, painted, and clear coated. A broad selection of colors are available, which may be solid or shimmer with a metallic hue.
